Game Rules – Boys:

The Catawba Classic will use NFHS  Rules with the following modifications:

Length of the Game: Games will consist of two twenty-two (22) minute running halves. The clock will stop if there is an injury. Five (5) minute half time.

Overtime: There will be no overtime on day 1 games.  On day 2, any game in which the score is tied at the end of regulation time shall be followed by one (1) four (4) minute sudden-death overtime period. If the score is tied at the end of the 4 minute overtime, the game will be decided by a Braveheart.

Penalty Time: Penalty time for Personal fouls and Technical fouls will be 90 seconds and 45 seconds respectively.

Tournament Scoring: For day 1 games, teams will receive 2 points for a victory, 1 point for a tie and 0 points for a loss.  These totals will determine day 2 seeding.  Seeding tie breakers will be determined by head to head record then total points against and lastly a coin toss.

Time Outs: Each team is allowed one 60 second time-out per half, kept by the umpire. No time outs will be granted in the last two minutes of either half or during any potential day 2 overtime games.

Ejections: If a player is ejected from a game by one of the game officials, that player will also be prohibited from participating in the team’s next game as well.

U19: All rules enforced per NFHS Rule Book except what is listed above.

U15:

  • Advancement of the ball rules shall be enforced (4 secs – goalie, 20 secs – clear midlfield, 10 secs- in attack zone).
  • Goalie Penalty: In home serves all fouls, excluding unsportsmanlike or expulsion fouls.
  • Goalies shall wear chest protectors and throat guards, and are encouraged to wear arms pads.
  • Take-out body checks are permitted as long as the checking player uses reasonable force (i.e., no follow-through) and no attempt to injure the opposing player is made. Body checks made with the intent to injure the opposing player, or where unnecessary/excessive force is utilized are not permitted. Spearing will incur a 90 second, non-releasable penalty, at a minimum.

U13: Same as U15, except:

  • Goalies must wear armpads.
  • No advancement of the ball rules apply, except for goalie clearing the crease within 4 secs.

U11: Same as U13, except:

  • The length of the short crosse may be 37 to 40 inches for offensive players in the U11 Division and defensive players in such divisions may use a stick with a length of 37 to 72 inches.
  • No body checking is allowed. Players are encouraged to “play the ball.” If a loose ball is stalled, officials may re-start play following the alternate possession rule.
  • Stalling shall not be enforced in the last two minutes for the team ahead
  • Any poke check making contact with an opponent (other than the gloved hand while holding the stick) may be considered a slash.

Game Rules – Girls Division

The Catawba Classic will use US Lacrosse Rules – Official Rules for Girls & Women’s Lacrosse – with the following modifications:

 

Length of the Game: Games will start on the hour and consist of two twenty-two (22) minute running halves. The clock will stop if there is an injury. Five (5) minute half time break.

Overtime: There will be no overtime on day 1 games.  On day 2, any game in which the score is tied at the end of regulation time shall be followed by one (1) four (4) minute sudden-death overtime period. Fouls: US Lacrosse Women’s Rules apply. Please note the following: Yellow carded players must leave the field for 2 minutes of elapsed playing time and no substitute may take her place. A player who receives a second yellow card will be suspended for the rest of the game, and no substitute is allowed until 2 minutes of playing time has elapsed. If a player is given a red card by an empire they are ejected from the game. No substitute may take her place for 2 minutes of elapsed playing time.

Equipment: All players must have a girl’s lacrosse stick, protective goggles, a mouth piece, and cleated shoes are recommended. Goalkeeper must wear a helmet with face mask, a separate throat protector, padded gloves, padding on the shins and thighs, a mouth piece, and a chest protector.   No jewelry of any kind is permitted or metal hair clips.

Playing Area: The field will be marked consistent with US Lacrosse field dimensions to the extent possible. Shortening the field and other playing area modifications will be at the discretion of The Catawba Classic.

Division Rules:

U19 – All rules enforced per the US Lacrosse Rule Book except what is listed above.


U15 –
All rules enforced per the US Lacrosse Rule Book except what is listed above and below.

 

  • Modified checking applies, defined as checking the stick in a downward motion away from the other players body below the shoulder level
